Academic Sports Association tradition
The Academic Sports Association was founded as early as 1909 in Kraków and, after World War I, its activities were expanded to include other cities with Academic Sports Association branches (Warsaw, Poznań, Gdańsk, Lublin). With each decade, academic sporting activities gained in value and, by introducing new sports into its activities, the Association attracted the attention of a considerable number of people who wanted to get involved in academic sport. It is interesting to note that in 2017 the Academic Sports Association was voted the best academic sports organisation in the world!
Well-known personalities
The importance of the work of the Academic Sports Association is reflected in the fact that the Polish national team includes competitors from academic sports clubs who make up 25% of the squad! Famous personalities coming from the ranks of academic athletes include Marek Kolbowicz, Konrad Wasilewski, Adam Korol, Justyna Kowalczyk, Otylia Jędrzejczak, Szymon Ziółkowski or Tomasz Majewski, who they have won numerous awards at major international competitions.
WPUT achievements in Polish Academic Championships
The competitors representing our University are successful in such disciplines as football, swimming, basketball, tennis, volleyball and many others. It is worth mentioning that the Polish Academic Championships are held once a year in each of the disciplines offered by the Academic Sports Association and it is an opportunity to compete with the best student-athletes from all over the country. The best competitors in a given sport and in individual competitions are awarded with medals, diplomas and often also small gifts.
Scholarship and frienships
Yet, these are not the only benefits of being successful in academic sport. Achievements at both national and provincial competitions can contribute to winning of a sports and academic scholarship granted by the university. It is a good opportunity to increase the academic average score by additional points improving our position in the ranking of students applying for a scholarship. The second great advantage of being in the academic sport environment is the opportunity to meet people with similar interests related to sport. Meeting new people may result in making new friends who will support us in the future.
